Giddy Up, Pardner

Gwen's school hosted Western Days this past Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy both days. The pony rides were cancelled, but Gwen didn't seem too bummed. She still enjoyed dressing up like a cowgirl, and especially liked her Wal-mart Toy Story Woody Boots. As a matter of fact, she wore them around the house yesterday morning, and I'm betting she'll want to wear them to church today.

When she came home Thursday, she decided to wear her Spiderman Underoos, which my best friend gave her TWO Christmases ago. I guess I need to retire them, huh? Of course, the boots MADE the outfit!

2010: Off to a Great Start

No major news to report here; all is pretty status quo. Matt has begun his LAST semester at school. I can't believe he'll graduate in May. Where did the time go? It seems like the last 2 1/2 years have flown. Gwen is back in the swing of things at school, and the second semester is underway at my school. The most exciting news to report is that Mema and Papa visited us last weekend. We enjoyed a fun-filled, long weekend with them. Because we weren't able to come home to Virginia for Christmas, Mema and Papa brought Christmas to us. Gwen loved her stocking stuffers, especially her Hello Kitty socks, coloring books, and Veggie Tales CD. We listen to the CD to and from school EVERY DAY. During the day, I catch myself singing songs from the CD (for those of you who know my singing talent - or lack thereof - I sing the songs quietly!). We played many games of Pretty Pretty Princess (Papa won and defended his crown with honor), Candy Land, Go Fish, and Snap. On Monday, we took Gwen to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel. She loved the girl chipmunks! We ate lunch in the food court then Papa accompanied Gwen on the carousel. We had a great time with Mema and Papa!

Gwen has begun writing her first and last name.

Quick, recent story to tell. After I buckled Gwen in her seat then myself, I made a comment to her. She said, "Mama, you interrupted me." Not realizing I had interrupted her, I apologized then asked, "Well, what were you doing?" She said, "Thank you for apologizing, Mama. I was praying." OK... so I felt "schooled" by my 4-year-old. For the next few minutes, she continued to thank God for a litany of things, including the sunrise, clouds, animals, Hello Kitty socks, etc. Children are such a blessing and can teach us to see the beauty in everyday things and things we take for granted. She reminds me to stop and give thanks to the One who created us to worship and love Him.

That's our life is a nutshell. Hope all is well with our family and friends. We love you much!

Christmas 2009

The Christmas break has proven be very restful and relaxing, albeit in Texas rather than Virginia. We've played many, MANY rounds of board games: Pretty Pretty Princess, Candy Land, and Chutes and Ladders. Gwen is now an experienced CL player and gets so excited when she draws the lollipop or ice cream character cards to advance her game piece. Watch out Mema and Papa... Gwen is ready to take you on when you visit! Fortunately, we got to Skype with my in-laws and Matt's Uncle and Aunt on Christmas day. The conference call was a nice runner-up to the real thing. Gwen has enjoyed other gifts, including books from her teacher and my best friend. Bonus: we also received enough snow to have a white Christmas. We missed being home for Christmas; however, we look forward to returning to Virginia soon and sharing more holidays and special occasions together, in person.

We hope our friends and family will have a blessed 2010. May you experience the peace, hope, and love of Christ as the new year approaches and pay it forward to those around you.

Love,
Dana

Gwen's Christmas Program

Drumroll please....

Gwen turned four-years-old this past Sunday. Where has the time gone? As I held a friend's baby this past Sunday night, I reflected on being a new mom four years ago. It seems just like yesterday when she fit perfectly in my arms. I worried about whether she was too cold or too hot. Did she cry because she needed to be fed or needed a diaper change or was teething or well, you fill in the blank. The learning curve was steep and scary. It's true what people say that having a child is like your heart being on the outside. You try to protect the fragile yet rambunctious being that seems to have no fear. Here's to Gwen... we love you more today than we did four years ago!

On Wednesday, students were able to wear pajamas to school for the Polar Express fun day. Students bundled up and rode a train then drank hot chocolate. Gwen raved about eating a candy cane. Of course, she chose her Best Day Ever Spongebob Squarepants pajamas... very appropriate!

On Friday, Gwen celebrated her birthday with her classmates. She got to wear a birthday ribbon and when it was time to feast on cupcakes, she said she got a special princess napkin.

Gwen loves to help me bake and cook in the kitchen. As a matter of fact, one of her birthday presents was a tub of cooking items. The top of the container looks like a stove top. She "made" us pizza and spaghetti with meatballs the other day. This gift has been a hit!

Here she is helping me make my mom's haystacks

THE ACTUAL BIG DAY... rockin' the big 4!

Gwen saw an Ariel cake in a grocery store about six months ago. Finally, Ariel arrived!!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! We are blessed to have her in our lives.

Thanksgiving 2009

We started our Thanksgiving holiday with a lunch at Gwen's school. Unfortunately, their teacher was sick the whole week and missed the holiday party. Parents brought a smorgasbord of yummy foods. Gwen helped me make my mom's corn pudding. We played Christmas tunes and enjoyed the first of three Thanksgiving feasts.

Lest I forget, Gwen's teacher is a HUGE Elvis fan. I know some of you (Katie Murray) will be very excited about this. Well, Gwen is now familiar with Elvis' "Blue Christmas". Matt made us a Christmas mix to listen to on the way to school. Of course, Elvis was included.

The second feast was a joint celebration between congregation members at our church and the Methodist church down the street. There were so many tables of salad, vegetables, side dishes, etc. When it was our turn to choose food, Gwen held her plate and told me what she wanted to devour. Yes, I said devour. She ate most of her dinner (turkey, fruit, corn) then scarfed a chocolate cupcake.

Gwen decided to wear her Indian hat that she made at school. We dubbed her "Little Leaning Leaf".

On Wednesday, we ventured to Marlow, OK to visit the Arnold family. Jason graduated this past spring from Southwestern Seminary and was hired to work at a church in Marlow. Their son, Nolan, and Gwen were best buddies. We spent the first hour of our trip in bumper-to-bumper traffic. No fun. Once we got on I-81, we enjoyed a very nice, scenic drive through small towns. We saw cactus growing in little bunches and cattle and horses roaming open fields. The landscape was refreshing and just beautiful.

Once we got settled into our hotel room, I contacted Kim, Jason's wife. We decided to eat dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Golden Corral. You can't go wrong with a buffet! It was so good seeing the Arnold family and Jason's mom who was visiting from the Dallas area. It didn't take long for the kids to get reacquainted. Gwen sat by Nolan and did as Nolan did. He ate pizza. She ate pizza. He played with his cars. She played with his cars. He giggled. She giggled. After dinner, we went to the Arnold's home so the kids could play and be rambunctious.

On Thanksgiving day, the kids continued to have fun. Gwen loved playing with Nolan's scooter when he lived at his last home. Well, some things never change.

I think driving lessons are in her future!

Thanksgiving lunch was delicious: turkey, sweet potato casserole, potatoes au gratin, fruit compote, green bean casserole, stuffing, ambrosia, etc. After lunch, Kim's dad took the kids outside to let them play in the back yard.

Later in the day, Kim took us to the local park. She said that people in the community pitched in and built this play area for kids.

Doesn't it look like they're going on a date? Too cute!

Joseph and Mary... later, they were superheroes

Ultimately, our visit had to end. Gwen requested to spend the night with Nolan. When we told her "no", she became sad. On the way to the hotel, she said she missed Nolan. In fact, she said that several times. We tried to explain that mommy and daddy missed their friends, too. We were so very blessed to share time with them and hope to see them again.

Hope you each of you had a blessed Thanksgiving!

Our Weekend

Not much too much to report. All is pretty status quo on the home front. We had a laid back weekend. Matt made breakfast yesterday morning. I cleaned and vacuumed. We watched UP, and I cried multiple times. This morning was jammed packed with activities. First, when Gwen woke up this morning, she converted her bed into Noah's ark.

Then we painted nails.

After nail painting, I made a fort with chairs and blankets so her turtle and tiger could nap. Sorry, no pic.

After church, we came home, ate lunch, watched football, then doodled with chalk. It was a gorgeous day.... temps in the low 80's!

Gwen and her classmates are preparing for a Christmas program. She loves to sing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", and other songs. To my dismay, I think she got her singing from me. Nonetheless, it is a JOY to hear her sing and watch the motions that go along with the lyrics. Can't wait to see the actual program!!

Have a blessed week!
